Wildlife artist and activist Alan M Hunt considers himself “a zoologist who paints wildlife”.

Born in North Yorkshire in 1947, Hunt’s artistic talents began to show when he was quite young, and fortunately, these talents were encouraged by his family. Hunt attended Middlesbrough Art College in Yorkshire and went on to study zoology at Leeds College and Bristol University.
He has been working as a wildlife artist self-taught for over forty years. His passion for birds and all flora and fauna has taken him all over the world, studying them in their natural habitats on specialist field trips and safaris, leading bird trips and teaching wildlife art in such bizarre locations as Alaska, where whisky had to be added to the paint water to stop it freezing, hoisted 100ft up into the tropical rainforest with a minimum stay of six hours or at the top of a Mayan temple, watching Crowned Eagles at the nest while just below fly past killer bees.

A devoted conservationist, Alan’s knowledge and experience is profound and formidable and his contribution to conservation equally limitless. He is very involved with worldwide fund-raising efforts. Hunt makes whatever contributions he can to conservation causes of his choice, as he considers animals first and foremost. He now concentrates on painting endangered species to draw as much attention as possible to their threatened survival.
“Humans are destroying wildlife and the planet, and we are animals, too”, says Hunt. “If my son doesn’t get to see half the wildlife in his lifetime I’ve seen, I’ll feel very guilty. Rather than become famous as a painter, I would like to be remembered as someone who tried to make people aware of the need to protect the environment and the planet”.

Alan’s achievements and recognition in the art world speaks for itself with 4 Gold Medals in the prestigious Society of Wildlife Artists (USA). He has been voted into the Artists Hall of Fame and has been Featured Artist at many major shows. Many more individual trophies are tucked into his drawer.

He has been invited to judge at many shows such as the UK National Children’s Art Competition, Not the Turner Prize, and has featured on various TV discussion and art programs. His originals are collected internationally and some of his images have been used on exclusive silk artwork and other creations.
