Constant Joseph Brochart

Constant Joseph Brochart was born in Lille on 7 April 1816 and who died in Paris on 7 May 1899. He was the second son of Antonio Maria Esquivel, also a painter. He studied initially at the School of Lille.

In 1867 Brochart was named as the Professor of Drawing at the Madrid School of Fine Art.

Between 1845 and 1862 he exhibited at different Salons with works like: “The Drunken Orgy”, “The injured Doe”, “The Virgin of the Roses” and “The Kiss of the Sun” and various portraits, one of which was of Christine Nilson.

The Imperial Lyric Theatre houses the works “Remember Algiers” and “The Oracle in Kabylie”.

The Museum of Lille possesses “Ondine close to Cascades”, which was a gift from the artist in 1862.
