Pompeo Massani

Pompeo Massani was a painter of figure subjects, genre scenes and portraits. He is acclaimed for his skilful evocation of sentiment and meticulous rendering of detail.

He emanated from Florence and was an art student at l’Academie des Beaux-Arts in Florence under Godigiani. After his debut in 1879, Massani exhibited in Rovigo, Genes and Florence.

The artist’s consummate skill in putting real characters onto canvas is more than evident in his warm and humorous paintings. Old men partaking of life’s small pleasures were one of Massani’s favourite subjects. None of the artist’s sitters were professional models; rather they were local men who enjoyed his company and warm studio.
