A sketch for the picture, with which Millais aged 17 gained the Gold Medal at the Royal Academy Schools in 1847, in a competition to illustrate the title, “The young men of the destroyed tribe of Benjamin seizing their destined brides in the vineyards – Judges 21”. The picture itself has not been traced. J. G. Millais (The Life and Letters of Sir F. E. Millais, I, p.23) reproduces a finished study. On the verso are three humorous pencil sketches, “Frederick the Great revelling st Widford”, “The Quintet”, and “The Beau”.
