Artists Biography
Edwin Hughes
British fl. 1880–1895Upon viewing his work you are dazzled by the clarity of his canvases. Chess is a topical subject seen in period costume pieces as well as one painted in the dress belonging to the period of the artist’s time.
Edwin Hughes, with facial expression and body language, encourages the viewer to become involved with the scene he has presented. But through skillful delineation, the anecdote is evident and we too can share the confidence displayed in the smug pose of the gentleman who reclines in his expected position of victory.
He exhibited eleven works at the Royal Academy also at the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils as well as in the provinces.
