Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau
1855-1931French 1855 – 1931
A native of the Burgundy region of France, Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau moved to Paris at a young age to study with Academic painters Tony Robert – Fleury and William Adolphe Bougeureau.
He debuted at the Paris Salon in 1882. In 1886 he won his first Honorable Mention at the annual exhibition and by the following year he was sufficiently established professionally to enjoy not only a bevy of new patrons but also the opportunity to explore the boyhood themes for which he is best known.
While other Genre painters focused their compositions on children in general, Moreau made mischievous little boys his unique speciality. Assuming a variety of guises from choir boy to baker’s assistant, these precocious young lads were universally endearing, even when behaving badly! Moreau employed a vibrant palette to relay a multitude of scenes of everyday boyish mischief.
Moreau continued to exhibit at the Paris Salon for the majority of his career.
