Pietro Saltini was a painter of historical and genre subjects. He was born in Florence on 21 February 1839 and died there in October 1908. He was a pupil of Agostino Lessi and later of Raffaello Martini and Pollastrini. Saltini became a professor at the Academy of Florence. His works can be found in the museums of Liege and Trieste.

Saltini specialised in and is highly regarded for his detailed genre and interior scenes.

The nineteenth century produced many of the most enduring images of provincial living in the whole of European art. Pietro Saltini made his name with his delightful pictures of family gatherings with their wonderful feeling of togetherness. Both Saltini and Torriglia who both painted during a similar period are renowned for creating fabulous interiors of extraordinary quality. Very few of these images ever hint at the fact that nearly all of whom pictured would have to labour in the fields, even children from the early ages of eight or nine.

Saltini’s appeal is clear for all to see, with his natural compositions and unlimited ability with his palette, we are left captivated with his charming and hugely appealing canvases.
