Robert Alexander Hillingford
British 1825 – 1904A 19th Century British painter of historical and genre subjects, Robert Hillingford was born in London in 1825.
Hillingford studied in Düsseldorf and Munich, as well as at home, before marrying an Italian model and spending a number of years in Italy, painting scenes of everyday life.
In 1864 he returned to London where he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1893, as well as at the British Institution and Suffolk Street.
He exhibited a number of battle scenes and the more popular historical genre subjects - often in 17th Century costume, which reflected his Munich training.
